“It’s like driving a car at night. You never see further than your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.”
~E. L. Doctorow
There’s something about the late night drive which calms our soul like nothing else, and I often find myself on night drives with no destination. Wind down the window and let the night in. The cool wind. The streets are empty and all the bars and pubs are shut, but every now and then, somebody else’s high beams go blazing by, and then they’re gone.
My love of night driving began in my early-twenties, as I began to struggle more and more with the anxiety-riddled mundanity of living and moving and trying to think clearly amidst all that day-time chaos. There’s no space to breathe. No room for contemplation. You go from point A to point B and try not to mow anybody down in the process. Your air-conditioner doesn’t really work, it just moves all the hot air around.
At night, late at night, it’s something else entirely. You drive, with no particular place to go. The night enhances the simple pleasures of solitude, the moonlit street unfolds beneath the tyres – and the roads you’ve known all your life seem new to you, hushed and quiet. It may feel, at times, that whatever you’re doing makes sense, that it’s important… That you’re cruising right through the middle of everything that matters, right then and there, you’ve got it all grasped beneath your hands.
Of course, you need music…
